People are currently dunking on this post that complains about Mastodon link previews DDoSing their servers - and they deserve every bit of it.

Pulling up this site in a browser with no privacy/sanity plugins installed, it made a total of 3740 requests within 4 minutes, which amounted to 267.22 MB transferred. It has ads left, right, bottom and center, and it has one of those annoying autoplaying videos, which ALSO has a video ad in front of it. The website would not scroll even close to fluently, and I'm doing this on a 24-core M2 Ultra Mac Studio with 128 GB RAM. I had to use the `debugger` command in the JS console in order to make the network panel in dev tools stop lagging.

In addition, they quote someone complaining about 114.7 MB being requested from their server over the span of 5 minutes. Not only is that less than half as much as you make a single user download if they don't actively cut into your bloatware crap, it also amounts to a whopping 3.06 Mbit/s that you're complaining about. THREE MEGABITS PER SECOND!

Your website is an insult to the internet.

If I was a malicious actor and I saw how vehemently people defended the usage of random scripts that claim to debloat Windows, MAN!

Some of them deactivate Windows Defender... UAC... It would be so easy as a malicious actor to get in on this recent trend...

if i had a cent for every “stack overflow” that ive encountered while working on this project so far, that was actually caused by the thread stack size being set to a comedically low value, id have 5 or so.

EDIT: I have access back, somehow merging accounts just takes an hour without them telling you that it does. Crisis averted. Still moving that stuff to 1password though.

I somehow managed to lock myself out of my Authy secrets

Zilog Z80, 1976 – 2024.

https://www.mouser.com/PCN/Littelfuse_PCN_Z84C00.pdf

Over its 48 year life, the Z80 found its way into inumerable devices.

It's perhaps most famous for being the CPU used in the ZX Spectrum, but could also be found as a sound co-processor in the Sega Mega Drive and SNK's Neo Geo arcade boards, among others.

I remember finding one inside my first HP inkjet printer back in the late 90's, and my parent's Sony Trinitron CRT, handling the on-screen menus (and teletext).

R.I.P. 💀

🥳 AltStore PAL, the first alternative app marketplace on iPhone, is available now in the EU for a nominal <€2/yr subscription price (to cover the Core Technology Fee), which includes access to @rileytestut’s Delta (which plays NES, SNES, GB/C/A, DS, N64 and Genesis games). It’s not fully open to third party devs yet, but there's a whole lot more to come in the future. Distributing your apps will be as easy as hosting a JSON file and pointing it at your notarized IPAs

Since I see that a notable VC-famous jerk is now telling us that he wish he'd "stood by" Eich way back, I'd like to tell you a true fact that situation: Eich didn't lose the CEO's job for his (reprehensible) Prop-8 donation.

Everyone wants to believe that's true, because fits nicely into narratives a number of invested camps want to believe, whether it's somebody being ousted for reprehensible views the woke SJW mob somehow pulling down a great leader (tm) but that's not what happened.
